Removed Cermaic Tiles all good apart from 1 line - Brick exposed
Anonymous user 01/03/2024 - 2.52 PM
Removed tiles today in prep for a tiling job (for a tradesman on this site). All around the bath I managed to get perfectly smooth apart from the top end of the bath where they have pulled away the wall exposing some brickwork. It is only I'd say an inch deep, 5 inches high and the width of a standard bath. Iv'e read that waterproof PVA applied to the bricks, then patching plaster on top trowled flat would do the trick ..... Can anyone confirm this. Much appreciated.
Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

First of you should ask the tradesmen you are employing, hope he is a tiler not a decorator, plumber or carpenter.
He should tell you that
1.you should never use PVA in an area to be tiled, use a primer advised by the adhesive manufacturers.
2
.you can not tile over patching plaster / bonding, tile adhesives will not stick to it.
3.plaster is not suitable for a substrate to tile onto in a bathroom. It will not safely hold the weight of most of todays tiles, max weight for tiles, adhesive and grout 20kg m2.
But saying all that your chosen tradesmen, if he is a tiler will tell you the same if you ask him.
Hope this helps

PVA is very useful when used correctly. So by all means use PVA on the bricks to avoid plaster cracking through drying too fast. Bricks are porous it will zap the moisture and the plaster could fall out
PVA is water soluble, when diluted correctly this allows it to sink into surfaces properly and not just stick to the surfaces allowing tiles come off easy. Surfaces like patching plaster wont be a problem when PVA is used properly the plaster would be sealed so tile adhesive can adhere to it
