How much do you charge in putting fernox to the central heating?

Anonymous user 09/03/2024 - 2.30 PM

How much do you charge in putting fernox to the central heating? I was quoted £85? I took the plumber about an hour or less to do it. The first time he did it, he charged me £75 and he used an unknown brand of leak sealer. It didn't solve the problem so after 6 days he came back and put fernox in and charge us another £85. Is this fair price? So the first leak sealer the plumber put is an unknown brand and the second time is fernox. How long can you expect a result as well if it work? And how long does the boiler needs to be working?

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

Hi - Not sure what type of system you have, but this sounds as though you have a type of sealed system boiler, with which you were getting periodic boiler breakdowns due to pressure drops? Looks as though (quite correctly sometimes) your plumber thought that this was due to a tiny leak somewhere in the system, and added a leak sealer (Fernox produce one called F4). I personally would have checked the expansion vessel first, as this can produce similar problems, which would result in further breakdowns within a timeframe similar to the one you mention. Individual charges sound fair, but sounds as though a more thorough investigation the on the first visit was called for, which might have prevented the second visit. Perhaps you could elaborate further by letting us know what type of system you have (i.e. does it have tanks in the loft or not?) and is the problem okay now? Is there any sign of water leaking on the outside wall behind the boiler? Hope this has been of some help Rick :)
