Can I wallpaper direct on a newly skimmed wall?

Anonymous user 23/02/2024 - 2.56 PM

I've just had the bathroom skimmed and want to paper. The wall paper instruction is to put the paste on the wall. Do I need to size?

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

Hi Actually, all you need to do is PVA the surface first. Mix PVA glue with a small amount of water, make it the consistency of gloss paint. Brush it on all over in two coats and allow to dry and then paper as per normal. Hope this helps Simon La Roche

Yes you can as long as you size the walls I tend to size the wall with thin paste 1st then why I'm waiting for the paper to soak size with strong paste this will enable you to get plenty of play with the paper making it easier when hanging as you can slide the paper around making it easier to get a pattern match From experience I always paste the paper the amount of paste you put on the wall would soak straight into the wall and as its a bathroom you need to make sure it's stuck down tight otherwise it will peel the minute you get any steam from the shower etc

Hi, You could...but it is not recommended!-If you ever want to get it off it is a nightmare! Better to mist coat 70/30, then at least 1 coat of emulsion to seal the surface. This helps greatly for pattern matching. Regards Simon

Hi, The way I would tackle this situation would be to apply a coat of uni bond ( pva glue mixed with water 30/70 mix ) and allow to dry, if it dries really quickly then I would apply a second coat. Once this is fully dry I would then size the walls twice then you can apply your wall paper by either pasting the paper or pasting the wall depending on paper manufacture instruction. I hope this helps. Regards Craig

I would personally use a thin coat of paste and allow to dry , then before hanging paper apply a 2nd coat of thin paste this gives you a certain amount of slip or give with the paper to allow to pattern match and butt the joints up a lot easier .
