Erect fence posts next to old wall - am I risking damage?

Anonymous user 08/03/2024 - 2.30 PM

I have joint ownership of a 3 or 4 foot Victorian single brick wall, with occasional piers, between my neighbour and me. I want more privacy and planned to erect 6 foot fence posts and top them with a further 3 foot of fence panels which will overlap the top of the wall. I have begun to pull up the paving slabs on my side running by the wall but am now concerned that in installing the posts I may damage the wall foundations. Is this likely? How might I avoid it? (Btw there is a covenant preventing the wall itself being built taller and also I really don't think it would withstand having the fence attached to it in such a windy and exposed place as it is).

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

Hello putting post in next to the wall should not be a problem providing the footings and wall are sound. If you take anything out of the side of the footing it would only be a small amount and when you back fill with concrete bring the concrete up level or above the footing. My main concern would be the covenant which restricts the height and I would check this first to see if the fence would be in the same boat as raising the wall. As an alternative you could consider posts and trellis and let ramblers or clematis cover the trellis. Hope this helps Kind regards G d barton
