Laying flooring over lead pipes
Anonymous user 14/03/2024 - 2.36 PM
My kitchen fitter has just told me that I have lead piping under the floor. I have already bought vinyl tiles online but he has advised laying vinyl sheeting instead incase there are any issues and the floor needs to come up. Should I expect future problems with the lead piping? Should I use sheeting instead as advised?? Thanks in advance.

Hi there,
You can always replace the pipes at first place and then put the floor you want on top.

Hi Ferry,
The reason everybody has moved away from Lead pipes, apart from being hard to work, is that health advisers believe that you may be able to get heavy metal poisoning from drinking water that has passed through it. I am not saying they are wrong, or that there were WMDs in Iraq, but working on this theory, we all would already have died out from the same, as all pipework used to be lead for hundreds of years! As an internal pipe it is unlikely to freeze, and split, although lead in less susceptible to this than copper or iron, due to it's flexibility. So your likely future problems are highly unlikely.

Hi. You are much less likely to get problems with lead pipe than copper, if he means a problem with leaks. David
