Plastering & Rendering

Should plasterboard in a kitchen be attached to an external wall with plasterboard adhesive (dabbed) without any other prep?

Anonymous user 23/02/2024 - 2.30 PM

Removed old kitchen to find mouldy walls. Chipped back plaster to brick. Plasterer started yesterday attaching plasterboard in kitchen. He is using plasterboard adhesive straight onto the brick. I am worried that the damp problem will re-occur as the damp comes back through the wall and if the new kitchen is attached to the plasterboard, it wall fall away from the wall, as the plasterboard does... Would batons have been better? Thanks in advance.

yes you'r right to be concerned, your plasterer should have rendered the walls with a waterproof scratching coat first allow to dry then dot dab the plasterboard on top with the adhesive, when dry skim over to a smooth finish, with what has been done so far, there is a very good chance that if the damp re-occurs it will come through the adhesive showing circular dots where the adhesive was placed behined the plasterboard, And i would also use a insulation plasterboard or a moisture plasterboard, for extra protection. hope this helps best of luck . martin MJPLASTERING

dot and dabbing is fine, and with this technic you will get a cavity, which will allow air to pass between the wall and plasterboard, is it an old property, was the plaster so bad it had to be removed, dont you think it would be better to solve the damp issue, as batterns can rot over time, if subjected to damp conditions. maybe tanking the walls would have been a good idea, but this only allow s the damp to go elsewhere.

i always apply a waterproof membrane system which is drilled onto the walls and plugged the surface has mesh on it then dot and dab onto this system

If you found mould on the walls the plasterer should not be dabbing directly onto this. There are a couple of options , you could render area with Sika waterproof render and then skim over this or you could fix batons to the wall , then cover with a vapour barrier and fix moisture board to this, then skim.
