What do I do if the quality of the work is terrible?

Anonymous user 23/02/2024 - 2.56 PM

Hi, After many good experiences on MyBuilder I hired a handyman company. The first day went well and I left a positive review. The job extended into two days and the level of the work really deteriorated. They didn't sand after plastering, just painted straight away. They got white paint all over the exposed brickwork in the lounge and on the wood floors - even on the slate path in the front of the house. The sealant they put around the bathroom is pilling. The job's bad enough that we're going to have to re-sand the walls and re-paint them and strip out the sealant and do it again. I asked the owner of the company to come and take a look but he's proving evasive. My question is: do we just have to stump up for the work and then pay again to have someone else repair it? It seems unfair. Do we have the right to expect a professionally finished job for our money?

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

Dont pay until you are happy with the quality of the work

Hello there, In the eyes of Scots you have a right to recieve a satisfactory quality of work for the money you pay. You can now go to Citizen Advice Bureau and ask them for help. In most cases when you pay someone else to repair the work you can claim the money back for the repairs from the company that provided you with unsatisfied service. I hope that this makes sense, if something is unclear I can explain it to you again. King Regards, MBF Renovation

Of course you should be satisfied with the work that you have paid for. It's also up to the Handyman company manager/director/boss to ensure that appropiate covering are used when painting, like dust sheets, polythene, whatever stops paint getting on things that are not being painted. The sealent should have been put on with a good smooth clean finish. Take some pictures so you have proof of the work that you are not happy with. I am no expert, but maybe withhold payment until the work you are not happy with is put right?

Hi there, Sorry to hear your situation , before work commenced normally contractor and client have a verbal discussion about the work and expectations . If your not happy You should try and get hold of them again , if no response try through my builder. There could be other factors involved with the job , but again the contractor should aim to keep you involved and informed throughout . Again sorry to hear you've had a bad experience and hope this answer helps
