I need a 22m long 6 foot high fence that stands up to gales but also gives privacy, I have seen some with concrete posts and also some with steel posts that the panels can slip into. can you give advice to the best method and the cost? I live in a windy part of Glasgow, parts of fence down almost every 2 years need somthing to last 15/20 years

Hi BH, I hope to be of assistance to you, so here goes. For a strong, fencing solution with the ability to last 15 to 20 Years I recommend the following-
8' Slotted/Mortised Concrete Posts, 20" in the ground.
6" Concrete Gravel Boards at ground level.
3No. Tanalized 4" x 2" Rails into the mortises.
Clad both sides with 4" x 1" Tanalized Boards with 2" Spaces between (Boards offset so that the opposite sides boards cover the spaces of the other side)
This fence solution will reduce wind restriction which is what blows most down. Provide privacy as it can't be seen through. Greatly reduce the potential of rot damage, and look nice...you could also board it at an angle for a more impressive look.
Regards
Simon

I would suggest that the best sort of fencing for a location like that is known in the trade as "Hit & Miss" Fencing. If you google it you should be able to find some images. It is constructed in a way that allows the wind through the fence because the fencing slats or boards are fixed alternately to opposite sides of the rails but slightly staggered. This effectively reduces the forces acting on the panels and retains the privacy. I hope that you find this information useful.
