Insulation

Bedroom above garage is cold

Anonymous user 28/02/2024 - 3.12 PM

Hello. I have an original build bedroom above my garage (which has a pitch roof to the front with a dorma window) and it is markedly colder than the rest of the house. There is thick insulation in the loft and in the floor cavity. The house was built in 1992 so I'm assuming it would have cavity wall insulation...? All the walls feel cold, the room has a small double convection radiator and I can't feel any draught coming through the window. Can anyone give me any other ways of making this room warmer?

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

Hi. This is quite a common problem. Fixing thermal plasterboard to the underside of the garage ceiling may help, and if access is possible to the edges, consider installing rigid insulation in the joist zone acting as a perimeter block (if you can, cut into the ceiling from below to insert, then repair). 1992 regs are less onerous than today's regs, and although the walls may be insulated, there may not be too much. A final option, is applying thermally insulated board on any external or party wall, if the ceiling improvements don't work. Best wishes
