Could I be paying for my neighbours gas?
Anonymous user 28/02/2024 - 3.12 PM
Hi there.... This may sound odd but I suspect i may be paying for the gas/elec for the shop below my flat... It is a very old building, there is one gas metre outside, which has one pipe running to my property and another which goes to the shop below. The reason I ask is because our water is connected which I only discovered after querying very high water bills with the water board... So I'm not sure whether to trust the landlord when he tells me that the shop has separate metres and my bills are going up and up... So any help on how I find out would be much appreciated:0)

Hi,
There are a few ways you could go about doing this.
1) In the morning when everyone leaves the house, make sure all gas appliances are switched off including any pilot lights if the boiler has a permanent pilot light. Take a reading at the gas meter when this is done. When you get home, take another reading at the gas meter before turning on any gas appliances. If this second reading is noticeably higher then it could indicate that another appliance is drawing gas from that meter.
2) Trace the gas pipe from the meter to your flat and trace any "T"s off from that pipe. This can only be an indication that the pipe goes into an area that is not yours. It could be capped for instance.
3) Phone your gas supplier and ask them. Tell them your concerns. They may send someone to have a look.
4) Ask your landlord to see the meter for the shop below.
Good Luck!

Call out a gas safe registered engineer, investigate.
