Internal cracks above fireplace first floor- who can fix this?

Anonymous user 23/02/2024 - 2.56 PM

The chimney breast on the first floor in our house has a large crack running right up it and continues across the ceiling. It looks like the wall is leaning back slightly. There is an open fire below on the ground floor and a gas fire in the fire place on the first floor. We have just bought the house and the previous owners said it has always been there. It looks like it has been filled at some point and then recurred. Could a normal builder deal with this or does it need to be a chimney specialist/ other tradesman? Thanks!

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

Was this not picked up on any survey? With a gas fire on the first floor and an open fire on the ground I would be tempted to carry out a smoke test if this hasn't been done to ensure no fumes are seeping into rooms especially from gas fire. Providing there is no movement it could be probably be remedied but I would rather be sure there is no movement before I carried out any work.
