Hot water coming out yellow every morning.

Anonymous user 01/03/2024 - 2.52 PM

Bathroom and kitchen hot water initially comes out clear for a few seconds and then turns yellow for 5-10 seconds before being clear again for the rest of the day, this repeats each morning. Pic of cold water v discoloured hot water: https://drive.google.com/file/d/0BwghqAR2FehVS3lnWnlqclZ3ZmM/view?usp=sharing - The combi-boiler is 18 months old - Cold water is always clear - Discolouration persists with water softener on or off Not sure if this was coincidence but about 2 weeks ago one of my neighbours had problems with their water that required the water company to come out and switch of the water mains from the street to several houses inc mine. After they left and from the following day I started to get the discolouration each morning. Any ideas what could be causing this? Thanks for any help or advice.

Hi Yonas, I suspect that it is a very simple cheap fix. I suspect that when the water was turned of small particles of the iron valve passed into the water pipes. Just as the water enters your boiler there is a fine mesh screen to collect particles exactly like these, to prevent them damaging the boiler. The addition of heat is causing these particles to oxidize creating rust which is colouring your water until sufficient has passed through to run clear. Clearing this filter should sort your problem. It is not happening to the cold as there is no screen to collect the particles, or heat to oxidize it. Regards Simon

Hi, It sounds like it might be the dhw heat exchanger. However, this is simply a guesstimate and if you require a more accurate diagnosis you will need a gas safe engineer with diagnosis experience. I hope you find this helpful.
