Are my floorboards any good?
Anonymous user 28/02/2024 - 3.12 PM
Hi. I'm desperate for floorboards in our Victorian flat. I've lifted the carpets and we have boards that have been painted white by the last owners but there are lots of gaps and they are a bit broken and mismatched and it seems to me they are more planks than original floorboards but I just don't know if the gaps could be filled and it could be sanded and varnished to look good. Is this the kind of thing i could get someone to come and look at and do up if it has potential? Or do I just need to buy new floorboards? Thank you!!!

Hi, you can get a flooring company that do sanding to have a look at it and they will tell you if it can be done, gaps can usually be filled.

As a flooring professional, i will probably get a quote for replacement of broken boards and sand and finish the floor, and compare the quote with a new good natural oak flooring with installation.
Depending on the size of the floor, you might just be surprised by the cost of going anew...
Typical example:
30 sqm flooring area to replace 10% of damaged board and sand and seal and finish over 4/5days work £3000.00
same project but with new Natural oak engineered flooring including installation £1800.00
almost 50% saving...
