Restoration & Refurbishment

The floors are curved up, what is it? what's the cost?

Anonymous user 28/02/2024 - 3.11 PM

Hello there, I saw a lovely house that I'm thinking of buying. However I noticed that the floors in the living room, dining room and just outside the front door (where the trash bins are left out) is curved up. Behind the dining room, the kitchen and the bathroom floors are not curved up. Does anyone have any idea what can cause this? Is this water damage? How much could it cost to restore? Thank you very much!

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

Sounds like it could be water damage and to get a rough cost you are best talking to a carpenter hope this helps WY&TY roofing

Another option could be "blind or dummy walls" underneath the floor. A lot of houses built after the second world war had extra supporting walls underneath the floors to support the floor joists because there was such a shortage of building materials that they quite often could not get timber the right width and thickness and length for the span so they used whatever was available and put small walls under the floors to support the weaker timber. Over time as the house settles the footings and main structure of the house sinks slightly but because there is not the same weight on the blind walls the floor will appear to be pushed up. The only way to find out for sure is to lift some of the floorboards and have a look.
