Vinyl flooring over quarry tiles
Anonymous user 06/03/2024 - 2.30 PM
I bought some vinyl flooring to cover a room with old and ruined quarry tiles (house built in 1922) however I have had mixed opinion on doing this job might cause damp someone said or the tiles can't breathe? Is there a proper way to do this job? I want to post the job on this site once i know more about it. Thanks

Hello,
The 2 surfaces can sweat, the best thing to do is put a thin screed( self levelling compound) on the tiles then put the vinyl down. This will smooth out your floor surface and prevent the quarry tiles embossing the vinyl.

Yes it can cause problems. All depends on your water table of your kitchen compared to outside areas.
Screeding won't make any different to moisture making vinyl bubble without a liquid DPM. I repair floors like this all the time when people gamble.
There are vinyls which let your floor breathe like Altro expresslay but as you have already got your vinyl then one way of doing it to be safe from raising moisture is -
Apply a coat of surface liquid DPM to the tiles like Ardex DPM 1c or stopgap F77 then prime and screed. That will stop any raising damp to your vinyl.

just do a dpm sandwich, apply dpm to tiles screed and re-apply dpm with roller again, fit flooring.
