Types of wood to make a back gate that will last
Anonymous user 14/03/2024 - 2.35 PM
Our back gate which is situated in a perimeter wall is shot. I want a door that will last - the house is about a third of a mile from the sea. The door frame is hardwood and is in good condition. A hardwood door would be too expensive. I have been advised to use hardwood to create an internal frame for the door and use a cheaper wood for the door cladding. Please advise what 2 woods should be used so I can put this in the spec. Someone has suggested that I could use compressed wood for the cladding similar to decking material. The door needed would be about 6.5ft by 3 to 3.5ft.Thank you.

Hi There,
Have you considered marine ply to clad an inexpensive wood frame?

For a gate I really cant see any problems with using standard, run of the mill builders merchant tantalised timber. Tantalised timber is pressure treated and will resist moisture and therefore rot very well.
