Laying new laminate flooring onto old screed help

Anonymous user 22 February 2015 - 9.41 PM

I am in the process of installing some new thinner laminate boards in the place of some existing thicker laminate that I will be removing. The sub floor has a level screed surface that the previous property owner had done. I have already been told that to compensate the height difference/thickness between the old and new laminate I will need to lay/install ply board (approx 9mm thick) over the screed base to raise the height of the floor to then install the new laminate on top of. My questions are as follows: 1. When laying the plywood over the screed, is plugging and screwing the ply in place sufficient or would I need to glue it too? With the plugging and screwing, what length/size screws/plugs would I need? (I do not know the screed thickness). 2. When the plywood has been laid, will I need to apply a thin levelling agent to fill any gaps that there may be between the boards/edges? Or, just apply the laminate adhesive and apply the laminate directly on top of the ply? Will the ply need priming at all? 3. There is a small gap (1" wide) running around the edge of the screed area. Will this need to be raised up to the same level as the rest of the screed before laying the ply board? Or not needed? 4. There is already existing skirting board that the old/current laminate sits underneath. Do I have to bear anything specific in mind when laying the new laminate in relation to the existing skirting boards? I want the new laminate to also sit underneath the skirting board. Any replies/help/feedback are much appreciated. It is a Polyflor camaro plank just to clear up a few questions. Would latexing be cheaper than ply then? P.S. I am still considering paying for the work to be completed. I have the laminate and adhesive already.

What Laminate do you have? Never heard of one that is glued down before? Are you sure it's not wood? Why are you using ply to build up? Can't you use a screeding compound instead.

it seems to me that you might be fitting a karndean type floor?? which is pvc and glued down, anyway as already said to raise floor height on a concrete floor you just latex it up to the required height. Ok so your fitting camaro from polyflor (good Stuff) just latex the floor up to the height that you need, also this floor is just cut in to the skirtings , there is no need to remove skirting a good fitter will fit upto the skirtings. once latexed you need to trowel the correct adhesive to floor and fully stick camro to the floor, we use pressure sensertive adhesive, I strongley suggest you get a floor layer to do this job. regards dominic dominic

The way to go with this one is to use a levelling compound to bring the floor up to the desires height, if you are using polyflor camaro you use a non slip underlay that is about 2mm thick, this product is not glued down but clicks together. The manufacture States that you should leave a 5mm expansion around the perimeter this can be covered with skirting or beading. I would use a professional not a diy
