Water on the walls inside the bedroom

Anonymous user 23/02/2024 - 2.55 PM

We moved into our house before Christmas, a 1950's semi. We noticed that the windows in our front bedroom, with a bay window, always seem to be full of condensation. 2 weeks ago we noticed small patches of mould appearing by the skirting board. We scrubbed the mould off with bleach - and covered the patches with damp sealant. We haven't yet painted over the damp sealant. Yesterday it was raining heavily - and this morning we have woken up to puddles of water on the window sill & water droplets over the patches of damp sealant. The windows are double glazed, but to be honest, it looks like a bad job. We had problems with whistling noises when it was windy, but we put sealant on the windows outside and this problem has stopped. Do you have any ideas what we may need to do next? Do we need to replace the windows or get a damp proof course? Thanks

A damp course wouldn't do much good if it's the window that is the problem. Is there any gap between the edge of the frame and the brick work? If so try some expanding foam and reseal them, does the mortar In between the bricks look in good order? Are the drainage holes blocked (most of the time you need to remove the glass to see this) Hope this helps Ko joinery

It sounds like condensation. Buy a humidity monitor from amazon (£5) if your humidity is over 50% this will cause water vapour to form on the windows and walls (dew point) the higher the humidity the more moisture will collect on the cold spots. it's very likely that the bay window wall isn't insulated too. Hope this helps Lee
