Best way to fit reclaimed Victorian wood flooring?

Anonymous user 23/02/2024 - 2.55 PM

How would you fit flooring that does not have tongue and groove? I ordered some Victorian reclaimed wood and I would be really grateful if someone could tell me how they would do it to get the best finish. As of yet the flooring are literally planks of wood.

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

Hello Walternaomi, Old floorboards are usually nailed using square brad nails as it is in-keeping with character. To get the best effect with your reclaimed floorboards you fix with brad nails and then use a drum sander to bring back the natural colour of the wood while maintaining the rustic character. If using a drum sander (quite a specialist task) just ensure you punch the nails below the surface otherwise your belt will rip. Also use an industrial random orbital sander to get close to the skirting board. If it is just to fix down cheaply you can either screw or nail (lost head ring shank are best). Good luck and should you need assistance please do not hesitate to get in contact.
