Removal of newel, spindles and hand rail?

Anonymous user 14/03/2024 - 2.35 PM

Hi there, We plan on updating the staircase etc at some point but in the mean time we'd like to remove the newel (leaving its base in place) along with the connected handrail and spindles that lead up to the the roof of the hall. The handrail and spindles only go up to the hall roof (about two thirds up the stairs so wouldn't leave much of a gap anyway. Would there be any major problems doing this ourselves or if we got any quotes in, what price would someone be happy to help for? Many thanks, Kate

Hi kate It is simple job to remove the stair parts yourself. Remove the handrail first by cutting through it half way up and remove in two sections. The spindles will probably just fall out now, if not just pull them out. The only tricky bit is cutting the newell post (if its just a square newell) to the right height so the new newell post is not to short. The cut also needs to be perfectly square all round so the new newell stands upright and does not lean out of plumb. If you have a turned newell in place now just cut through at its lowest turned point where it meets the square base section and you are ready for new stair parts to be fitted. regards Terry Owen (carpenter)
