Damp Proofing

Ppu v heat recovery unit

Anonymous user 06/03/2024 - 2.30 PM

A few yr back we had quite bad condensation problem in upstairs back bedroom. North facing wall. Mould appeared in/in wardrobe. Had number of specialists out who recommended various solutions and we opted for ppu to be fitted. This has reduced humidity and last winter the condensation in whole house was virtually non-existent. This winter however we have had to turn the ppu right down as a) we couldnt bear the icy cold blast any more and b) i suffer from chest priblems and the dic said the house was too dry. Upon turning it down the condensation returned in the rear bedroom and the mites that we thought we'd got rid of seem to have returned as theyve been spotted on the window and sill. Needless to say i am horrified and the endless cleaning down and vacuuming have resumed. The ppu has been cranked back up and the condensation has reduced again. We have a fan in the bathroom and the door is shut whilst we shower and the window open. 2 questions - will a heat recovery unit work any better and how much to install/running costs and shy have the mites returned as theres no mould or damp that we can see. Humidity reading is between 46-55%. Any help appreciated. Thanks.

Hi The heat recovery units work well if it's only affecting one room but if the condensation is found to be in more than one room then I think stick with the piv unit. The costs for a heat recovery unit would be £450 fitted

There is a unit on the market called a loft mounted PIV unit with incorporates a heating element, meaning that when the temperature falls below 10 degrees the air been pushed into the property will be at a temperature which is comfortable. This unit is a pricey item but I have found the best solution! The unit is around £800.00. Thanks, Mike- Ridgeway Electrical Contractors

I have fitted a numerous amount of these unit and whilst they are quite expensive I find that people have trouble getting used to them running constantly and worry about the cost although the cost is minor. If you are the type of person that don't mind the noise they produce then it may be the way forward. You can have the loft type which are more expensive but its the same thing you can feel the air being blown out and it can feel like a draft.
