Engress window hinges to meet building regs. Can I replace exsisting ones on window?
Anonymous user 28/02/2024 - 3.11 PM
I have just put a window in a garage conversion but the building inspector said it needs to open to 90 degrees as opposed to the 45 it currently. Couple of questions. 1, should the window company have known this ? 2, how easy is it to swap over the engress hinges, so I can meet the building regs. Any help would be much appreciated.st a quick one. Is there a danger I would have to replace the window completely. Many Thanks for any advice

If you put the window in your self, then it's your responsibility.
If the builders put it in then it's theirs. If you used a self cert installer then it's his and he's supposed to know the regs!
Hinges only need to open to 90º if there's less than 0.33m2 clearance on the 45º hinges.
I'm guessing the inspector has checked this.
But to answer your question about replacement hinges, yes it's a straight forward job.

Should be and in my experience is a simple job to retro fit egress hinges. Measure the size of the existing hinge first. Although we have a window supplier we find it easy to just order hinges off ebay. We've never had a poor quality one yet.
Hope this helps
