Only half felted roof for loft conversion?????
Anonymous user 06/03/2024 - 2.30 PM
I am currently having a loft conversion. Half of the front roof tiles (diagonally) have been removed to put in 2 velux windows. This section will then be refelted and battened and tiles replaced. But I questioned wether it should all have been refelted etc and was told that it was normal practise to just replace the section removed . Is this right?
Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

The felt works as a barrier if your roof is to fail... The way it is laid is in full runs across the roof and then overlaps the next from bottom to ridge.. So yes if the roof has been striped and you have had a loft conversion then it should be re felted.
Acces does not always allow this and this is of course costly as scaffold will be needed and your roof will have to be stripped. If in doubt ask the building control looking after your project.

Hi, when they came to look at the job they should of seen there was no felt in the loft and should of told you about it. They should of asked if you would like them to do the other half of the roof while they were up there obviously the cost would have been added on though unless specified by you not to put felt on. I know from my time in the trade that old houses with slate roof do not have felt as slate's have a tight fit so water cant get through. Hope this helps Regards
