Moving a bathroom upstairs - but what next?
Anonymous user 06/03/2024 - 2.30 PM
I have had a downstairs bathroom relocated upstairs. The builder was able to self-certify the connection to the drains and we got confirmation from the council that we didn't need to apply for permission. However I am not worried that by not having to apply to the council, that there are other processes that won't take place such as updating the deeds of the house etc. Who exactly do I need to notify about the new floor plans etc for when we decide to move house?
Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

Point 1 moving a bathroom upstairs in a property.
Planing permission is only needed if you are going to interfere with the structure of the property like adding an extension Loft or basement conversions.
Jobs done outside of this Scope require each trades person to belong to a professional body example Builder = FMB. Electricians = NICEIC or Napit. Gas installers = GSR and so fourth.
Each trade will be aware of the building regulations that affect their trades and will know what work undertaken will require certification.
when certification is Done you will receive a Building Compliance certificate Covering the work.
So for Example House has Planning permission for Loft and Extension
A Building inspector will be assigned to your project to make sure the build is to Building regulation, then the Council will issue a Compliance Certificate for the work that has been completed by the Builder.
Plumbers and electricians self certify and you will receive Building Compliance certificates For New Boilers gas fires Whole house rewires loft and extension wiring. Small Jobs that do not require Compliance certificates can be self certified for gas engineers with a CP12 certificate and so on.
They are in place and make it much easier when you sell a property and much more when it comes to insurance.
Its a broad subject covering a wide scope of Buildings Commercial ,Industrial,Domestic homes, and much more.
It is there to protect all parties concerned. The knock on effects that can be caused from not complying or a trade person that does awful work can be expensive rectification and stress all round.
So always use a class of Trades Person.
Hope this helps. AJ Gas & Water Services
