Tiling onto Pink Plasterboard in a Cloakroom
Anonymous user 28/02/2024 - 3.11 PM
Hi Guys, I have a small office, and when the builders created the original toilet they made it from shellsceme - the outer being MDF then 2" ali every 1M and the inside being a kind of acrylic. This looks cheap nasty and horrible, so my plan is to remove the acrylic use some left over pink plasterboard from another project and then tile on to that. There is no shower, it is purely a toilet and a sink - so I am wondering if I am good to tile straight on or whether I need consider water-proofing the plasterboard in any way etc? Thanks Neil

Hi there, lets see if i can be of any help. I see you have a couple of options. You could either go to a local tiling shop and buy some adhesive primer. Then according to the manufacturers instructions coat this over the plasterboard prior to tiling. Or you could just get the moisture resistant plasterboard and tile directly onto that. Depending on the size of the area the second option would be better. Hope that helps.

It is perfectly fine to tile directly onto plasterboard without priming, actually plasterboard (not painted) is the only surface that doesn't need priming. If you worry that you going to splash a lot of water on it you can waterproof it and then prime it but if we talking about occasional drops from washing hands and cleaning I wouldn't worry about it. Just use apropriate adhesive and grout and you'll be fine I can guarantee you that.
