Why the charge to cost up a job?!

Why do Damp Proofing specialists insist on charging a fee to come round and quote on remedial works required when every other trade (Roofing contractors, Builders, Plumbers etc) are happy to pop round and cost up jobs without a heavy charge for doing so? It makes it impossible to get comparative quotes if you're paying £70–£80 each time for them to assess the work and cost it up?! In my case i've already had a structural survey that highlighted the areas of concern, i just need a Damp Proof specialist to come round and tell me how much it would be to fix it.

Because if you want a comprehensive quote they will need to take up floorboards and actually do things to establish the full extent of the repair.... Just pay one company and get the rest to quote from his findings.... they should not even need to come around
