Plastering & Rendering

Massive hair line cracking across rooms and blown plaster - Why? And what to do next?

Anonymous user 28/02/2024 - 2.38 PM

We had some walls in a 1930's house skimmed approx 2 years ago, we have seen hairline cracking appearing accross whole walls and in places the plaster has blown - we were advised to skim at the time as we were told the walls were sound - what has gone wrong? In places I understand that the new skim has come away and in others the old and new plaster has blown. It has happened on the inside of both exterior brick walls and interior walls (old breeze block construction made from coal dust as I understand). What will happen to plaster that has blown if we leave it? In one room I have put my finger through the plaster, will all the walls get this bad?

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

yes, all new plasterwork will end up blowing,a re/skim is only as good as whats below it,in this case, old render, which sound as if its breaking down every were, this is typical of portsmouth houses, the render is breaking down on all houses here.the best way to attack is hack off complete rooms and start again,or dot and dab,but this system is still reliant on sound original walls.or even new stud wall put up next to original, but you will be loseing 50/75mm of each wall. sorry but not i cheap fix.either way.

In the end it will fall off, take it back to original block/brick wall and re=plaster is imho your only solution
