Mould on walls around window in extension

Anonymous user 14/03/2024 - 2.35 PM

Moved into new property which is a 1960's brick detached with a two-storey extension. In the main bedroom in the extension we have suffered a problem with condensation and mould on the walls around the window. Have kept windows open to ensure ventilation (hygrometer shows 67% when windows left open) which has helped with condensation but the mould still persists. Furthermore, we have noticed a crack on the outside of the extension where it meets the house - not sure if the 2 are related? We are looking to remodel this bedroom totally, potentially getting a new window if it will help so just wanted advice on what tradesperson to best contact to advise us on how to remedy these problems moving forward - don't want a newly decorated bedroom with this problem! Help much appreciated thank you

Start with getting the reasons for the crack investigated first. The general rule of thumb is that if you can get your fingers in the crack then you need to be getting some structural investigations done before any redec work.

If you are experiencing a condensation and mould problem, then the correct ventilation solution is needed. Whilst opening the windows will let some moisture escape, it also allows heat to escape. As humidity is relative to temperature, if the temperature drops then humidity will rise. The ideal humidity level is between 45-55%, so it's quite high in your bathroom. Ask a ventilation specialist for a free survey to find the guaranteed cure in your home.
