Hairline cracks in new plastering
Anonymous user 03/03/2024 - 3.14 PM
Hi, We had our walls skimmed in July last year (2014) and painted about a week after drying. The finish was really smooth and we thought the guy did a brilliant job. But we've just started to noticed that we are already starting to get very fine hairline cracks in the plaster. Is this normal? We were going to get some more rooms done but weren't sure whether to use the same guy if this is the result. Or could this be a result of an older house built in 1930s? Thanks in advance for the advice!

I would never guarantee a reskim against hairline cracks. If they wouldnt show after being repainted then id say im on the plasterers side if they are larger cracks that would show after repainting id say he hasnt followed good practice. Always hack off and redo properly if you want a guarantee against any hairline crack.

It really just depends on what preparation the plasterer undertook to give you the skimmed walls. If it is an older house then the walls should of been properly prepared, scraping any loose areas, using scrim tape on any cracks, even the use of betocontakt (strong adhesive bonding agent) and a backing plaster before it is skimmed may be necessary to stop hairline cracks reappearing. This is more expensive but you do pay for what you get and for me, I wouldn't skim a room if i knew I could not get rid of the cracks.
