Plastering/rendering around a fireplace
Anonymous user 03/03/2024 - 3.14 PM
Hi, I need help selecting the corner beading to use around the fireplace. The inside of the fireplace is currently bare brick, and I would like to render it (min thickness 10mm). The outside of the fireplace will be skimmed (max thickness 3mm) So what type of bead/s (corner or otherwise) can I use when rendering on one side of an external corner, and skimming on the other. Thanks.

hi the best bead to use would be a stainless steal render bead but i would advise to remove a section all the way round the outside of the fireplace opening so you can fit the bead properly then you can render the inside and patch the outside before skimming over the top. i would use a lime based render and make sure you pva the walls beforehand, hope this helps.
regards steve.

Hi, to achieve the best finish I suggest you fix a timber to the face of the breast to render to. Render a scratch coat inside the chimney first, then a top coat. Remove the timber and fix a Skim Coat Stop Bead to the face of the corner before plastering.

You would normally hack enough of the render of to be able to get a proper render corner bead on but you may be able to put a render stop bead on the inside edge and then overlap on that with a fine coat stop bead hope this helps not sure if it would look a bit odd done like this thou never has to try it myself
