Hot water taps and gravity shower lost pressure after draining system

Anonymous user 23/02/2024 - 2.55 PM

I had a leak on one of the stop valves that are installed either side of the central heating pump. It's a 90s house with 2 water tanks in the loft, small tank for the central heating and a bigger tank for the cold water supply. I shut off the main water supply and drained water tank, hot water cylinder and central heating system to fix the leak which turned out to be a washer. After the repair I closed all the taps and turned the main water supply back on. When the tanks in the loft filled up again I bled the radiators and they are getting hot allover so the central heating appears to be OK. The problem is with the upstairs hot water taps and gravity shower, the shower only drips and the taps run ok for 30 seconds and then slow right down. I left the downstairs hot water tap open for about half hour and during that time it was running ok for 5 seconds then loads of air spurts out but it never stabilized so I turned it off cause had to go to work. Any information as to what the problem could be would be a great help.

Sounds like you have an air block in the hot water pipework. The easiest way of sorting this is to connect a bit of pipe (hose pipe or similar) from the cold tap to the hot tap usually the kitchen sink then open the hot tap and then the cold tap. the water pressure from the cold tap then forces the air blockage out the hot water pipes and back into the tank in the loft so only do it for a few seconds usually 10- 20 seconds will suffice. Then turn the cold tap off and the hot tap remove the pipe and try the hot taps for a bit you may get get spurting from the hot tap but it should stop and you should have normal hot water supply back.
