Reduce Width of Chimney Breast downstairs, leaving the flue

Anonymous user 03/03/2024 - 3.14 PM

Hello, I am buying a 1930's terrace which has a wide chimney breast in the centre of the lounge/diner. Upstairs there is a much narrower breast - which I assume just encases the flue pipe. Can I reduce the width of the chimney breast downstairs, so it is as wide as the one upstairs? There is only an electric fire downstairs now, but if this work was down, could you re-open the flue pipe and add a woodburner/ gas fire etc? Thanks Rachel

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

Hi Rachel, If you have a chimney breast upstairs, you most certainly will have one down stairs which is very typical of 1930s property. Decommissioning the gas fire and adding a wood burner will be no problem. This will need to be installed by a professional installer(certificate required) who will fit a flexible flue lining through out the length of the breast complete with a cowl at the top of the chimney.
