Painting exterior of house.....HELP PLEASE :)

Anonymous user 28/02/2024 - 2.37 PM

Hi, New to this so any help and advice is greatly appreciated. I want to paint the exterior of the house (standard 2 storey), existing is white piant which looks dull and dirty. We have also recently had some new windows fitted so there is now cement work around the window frames. * Will these cemented areas need sealing or filling before painting over? * Will it be ok to paint over cement as I dont want it too look odd to the rest of paint work? *What should we use to repair minor cracks? and flaky paint? * What paint is best to use? * Is it best to go for darker colour or pastel? * What steps should I follow in order to complete this? Thanks in advance & sorry for the list of questions...

Hi I recently had a job simiar to this. Ok all mortar and brickwork that is inneed of repair you want a product called Toupret, its a filler and ideal for exterior builds has it allows for movement so fixs and reduces further cracking in the future. Jet wash the building so you have a clean substrate "surface". All exterior paints will be ideal,"SANDTEX" i would go with as its proven its self time again with exterior decoration and is reasonably priced, also you will beable to complete this with exterior sealer to seal up all porus areas so there wont be any flaking or cracking of paint in the future. Now your ready to paint ,give it two coats for paint density, if your looking to match up paint to excisting paint then myself i would advise against it and just repaint whole surface area, but that is your shout as you are buying the paint. Dont be mixing PVA with any paint or water for exterior decoration, dont mix PVA with any paint full stop inside or out !! And for trim , myself i use Sikkens Rhubol Satura Satin but this is exspensive but the best, you can go with Sadolin Supadec in either sheen, still a bit dear but light years ahead of many other brands in all round performance with a 10/15 year guarentee on durability. Happy painting Kind regards Chris

Hi, Sugest to start first with preparation: First suggest to use a jet wash to the house so all dirty and flaky paint come`s off For fresly cement you can mix a bit of paint with water and pva so normal paint stick better to the cement and don`t flaky in the future For small cracks better to use exterior decorator coulk and make it smooth with a damp cloth (filler may crack in the future but the coulk is more flexible) Suggest to use Wheathershield Sandex Paint or Dulux paint for exterior at least 2 coats Don`t forget to put masking tape around the plastic windows if u have and clean the plastic pipes or paint straight on when you paint becose later will be to dificult Good luck and all the best, Chris

HI Ok so first any new cement repairs require a sealing coat To repair minor cracks you will need a flexible exterior filler the lighter the colour the longer it will last... reason lighter the colour more reflection of heat Best paint is pliolite matt which forms a flexible finish also water tight within 20 minutes of application Hope this helps Regards Lionel Bexon
