What's the best way to cure water hammer? Do I need a pro?

Anonymous user 03/03/2024 - 2.39 PM

The vibrating pipe is the inlet to my c/w tank. Would it be better to fit an equilibrium valve or a water hammer arrester? Or maybe both?

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

Water Hammer is caused by either poor pipe work or more commonly because when you open or close a tap it opens or closes with a snap rather than a gentle closing or opening of the tap. So, check what you open or closes causes the water hammer and then check the washers, etc. to check not worn and if so replace. Another reason is water pressure is too great, if this is the case a pressure reducing valve can be fitted. Bill Pipe Dreams Plumbing Services Bournemouth

Most likely it will be the washer on the cw tank is knackered and causing the pipes to shake and make a water hammer noise. Check first before fitting anything

In my personal experience, just turn your stop cock 1/4 turn to reduce water pressure, should sort your problem. Regards Phill

Hi Depending on your level of expertise, you can fit a water hammer arrester. It goes in your main water inlet pipework and takes the recoil out when the system is used. Works in about 95% of cases. Hope this helps. Thanks. Fred.
