Artex falling off ceiling

My mums kitchen ceiling has 2 patches where the the artex has fallen off. I asked her about it and she said it started to come loose and then fall down. I am concerned it may contain asbestos so have arranged to have it tested. It was done she believes around 1977 or within 2-5 years after this. I am terrified as my 2 very small children have also been in that house so my mum, children and husband have all potentially been exposed. I am literally awake every night worrying about this. What are the chances asbestos exposure has occurred?

I am no expert in aspestos but this aspestos in art thing has only recently come to light.....for the last 2 years we have been scraping artex ceiling before plastering and none of my lot have croaked it yet. I believe there is only trace elements in some artex so the chances of any illness in minuscule, if you want to stop it from peeling any further then pva it, ultimately you should possibly re-board and plaster

If it does contain asbestos then it is only white asbestos which is chrysotile. This is not as dangerous as blue or brown and does not require licensed contractors to remove and dispose of it. This type of asbestos was used as a binder and i would not be overly concerned with exposure as you have described. If you can relate the damage to a leak in the bathroom above then call the insurer and they will take over dealing with the damage.

Artex and other trade names contained white Asbestos in small amounts 3_5% . the white asbestos isn't as dangerous as the blue type , but in the late 80's and 90's laws put a stop to this . if you need to treat this flaking the safeist way is to get a specialist firm in , then you can seal the effected area and repaint . if you need to do the work your self you can have the Artex tested and get a safety report done , you can get protective workware on isolate the area and wet down the the work area to cut down on dust .. On the whole this is not a DIY job and a Asbestos removal firm should be called in
