Fireplace bricked up and chimney pots removed and sealed - 1930s house

Anonymous user 03/03/2024 - 3.13 PM

Roofer has removed chimney pots and said no ventilation is required if fireplace is bricked up? Pots been removed and sealed. Is this advisable? Should there be ventilation? Fibretechs: So vent needed in each bricked up fireplace AND vent stack. What happens if both fireplace and chimney remain sealed? If nothing is done, and left alone what can happen?

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

Tell the roofer to do his job and insert a airbrick into the chimney above the roof or you will have future problems. Hope this helps. Regardz Keith

This is wrong! Your Chimbo gets wet externally and when hot air rises it will form condensation at various locations in the property - normally in the bedrooms - if the stack is showing above the pitch - then consider removing it or providing ventilation. With regards to the above comment, if you put an air bick in the stack externally with the fireplaces still bricked up you will have MORE condensation problems. The Chimbo needs vents in each room if you re-open the stack or vent it externally. Hi - basically if you have a chimney protruding through your roof and it is sealed off then you could have condensation problems with staining on the chimney breasts internally during cold wet weather. Remember this gets wet and water will absorb into it slowly. If you have a Chimbo it needs venting externally and in each room with a breast, otherwise you may have problems......with dampness. Best option is to remove it and tile over the roof OR maintain it and ventilate it. Last winter was very wet and I saw many chimneys failing because due to their location are rarely maintained. Hope this helps
