Short circuit in the kitchen when excessive steam is generated through cooking
Anonymous user 03/03/2024 - 3.13 PM
Often when their is excessive cooking and therfore alot of steam in the kitchen despite keeping the windows open, we experiance a short circuit on the ground floor sockets. The RCD trips and only after few hours do the ground floor sockets start to work again? Is the cause condensation and therefore water droplets that may enter the sockets from the litchen tiles etc or is there a deeper problem that i'm over looking? What is the best thing to do if we experiance this again? Thx Ash

Sounds like circuit has very low insulation resistance to start with and the condensation pushes it over the edge, hence RCD trips to avoid anyone getting a fatal electric shock. Circuit needs to be fully tested and age/condition of cables established.

I would imagine that the steam from the kitchen is unlikely to be the issue.
All we could recommend is the circuit to be tested and the loadings on this circuit checked.
