DIY painting over glossy walls

Anonymous user 23/02/2024 - 2.54 PM

Hi, I'd be grateful for tips as a newbie DIY-er! I'm keen to paint my little boy's room. Currently the walls have a shiny glossy appearance, and we'd like to paint them matt. What's the best way to prepare the walls? Do I need to sand (and if so what sort of strength paper?!), or would a good primer do the job? Similarly, the wood skirting boards and window frame are in gloss and we'd like to have them in eggshell. I had assumed I'd need to sand these and the prime/paint. Thanks

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

Hi I would assume the walls are in a vinyl silk emulsion use a medium sand paper to lightly go over the walls removing any nibs that are sticking out do any filling and sanding as needed and when filler has been sanded down touch up with emulsion to seal the filler the apply normal vinyl matt emulsion over the existing paintwork. With the woodwork use medium sandpaper to take the shine of the existing woodwork prepare as needed when filler has been sanded down seal with wood primer and apply undercoat ant topcoat.

Hi There. Yeh, a light sand down for your walls as ADB says. I myself never paint straight onto silk with matt emulsion as over time the surface of the matt can start to wrinkle (kind of small cracks all over the surface of the paint), I always go over the silk with an oil based undercoat to give it a good seal. I then go over that with the required coats of matt finish emulsion. I have never had any problems using this method.
