Anonymous user 01/03/2024 - 2.51 PM

Hi, we have just had a damp course injected to the external wall in our hallway. re plastered, new skirting boards and all repainted. now 1 week later the rising damp is back! rising up the wall, you can see the salt crumbling! what can we do? we have spend so much money on this and its back. why would rising damp return after damp course, new plaster etc? Help!

Hi Sarah when the walls are damp proofed you can still have salts come through the initial first render as it dries, this is normal and they need to be brushed off and wiped with a damp cloth to completely remove, because you have efflorescent salts coming through this does tell you it is a damp problem,It could also be that they did not use the correct water proofer and salt inhibitor, why don't you go back to the damp proofer and ask about the salts, send a photo then I might be able to assess better, I have salts come through my work but I do explain before I start it is why you have to wait at least 6 weeks before giving a mist coat of matt emulsion so you can brush off the salts ,use no vinyls silks or gloss paints but you should of been informed of this. Sarah simple ,the work was not carried out the way it should be ,but you should have been told not to decorate for 26 weeks ,when old plaster was removed it should have been left to dry out natural, never had this happen on my jobs ,

possibly because it has been wrongly diagnosed and is not rising damp. rising damp is misdiagnosed in over 75% of cases. check the walls guttering and roof line. good luck Alex
