Running and Fishing Cables in cavity wall

Anonymous user 01/03/2024 - 2.51 PM

I want to put up 4 wall lights on the outside of the house and don't want to run conduit on the outside or mess anything up on the inside - is it possible to run cable through the cavity, if so where is best area to drill through to feed the cable? there is a window or door between all the lights. Is it possible to rake out the pointing and run the cable through that and then repoint or is that unsafe?

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

Hi pdc_36, In response to your question I would say its nearly impossible to run the cables how you mentioned above, 1 because the angle to fish horizontal between brick & cavity is too big, 2 because you have a window or door between each fitting, unless you were to fish at the same height above said windows & doors. again not easy to achieve. If I were faced with this problem, I would be looking to run the cables under the floor boards in the house, then at each position of the lights outside, drill into the void under the floor, at this point there is 2 options, 1 fish vertical down the cavity to the height of the lights which is easier than fishing horizontal thus keeping the cables hidden. 2 drill straight out through both skins and have a short piece of exposed cable down to the height of each light. 2 is much easier because your not fishing down the cavity. Both will be time consuming but if you really don't want exposed cable then I don't see any other way.

unfortunately raking out pointing to put a cable in is not allowed and neither is running cables in actual cavities as they are all against regs.

In reality you can't do this job without giving or taking a little mess. Raking out the mortar is a no go! totally against regulations. Your best asking a local electrician to come and view the job and they will give you definite answer of what will be involved. you do not always need conduit etc on show but you need to accept the fact most jobs Involve mess. Don't choose to scrimp on areas that matter as it will only look awful.
