Steel erection for domestic extension required
Anonymous user 03/03/2024 - 2.39 PM
I am about to purchase steel beams and posts for a small extension. I am looking for a reliable steel erector who is interested in a job involving four posts, linked by three beams, which in turn have two beams extending into the main house, resting on pads. I have looked through Google for steel erectors, but can’t find any company that seems to fit the bill. Any help would be appreciated in locating a good erector. I have full plans to price to

Any good builder should be able to take on this job (if you have a drawing) It all sounds pretty easy and standard stuff.

Hi Chris
Your Builder should know! However you should have details from your architect who produced the drawings and you should have steel calculations.
Have you asked them!
What area are you!
Need more help give me a call.

Most good builders will be able to help as long as all the fabrication is carried out prior to delivery. It is then normally a matter of bolting together (relatively straightfoward). Alternatively alot of steel suppliers have fabricators or will know of good fabricators who can carry out fabrication on site (they will often weld onsite). Or fabricators can supply and fit.
The most common and straightfoward approach will be to have the steels plated and bolted offsite, and then assembled onsite by a builder.

Hi the answer depends on your needs:
1 Firstly you need all of the steel designed by a structural engineer, this will include all of the calculations and fixing methods required.
Note:
As you mention beams and posts it would normally mean fabrication is required rather than just cut lengths of steel Your engineer may also be able to supply a list of suitable steel fabricators and erectors.
2 Presuming fabrication is required you can take 2 routes
a. Look up a Steel Fabricator (not steel erector) there are several of these in most major towns.
b. You could get a reputable builder with experience of this type of work to do this for you, and should be able to arrange the FABRICATION and erection of the steel.
Note
It is rare that steel work is a stand alone project in housing alteration/renovation work, which is why (unless you are carrying out the work yourself) you would at some stage require the services of a builder.
3 Most fabricators would also offer a fitting service, but would rely on prior work by your builder, at least a foundation for the posts.
4 Prior to commencement ask if the work needs approval by the local authority building department, and they would check the design, calculations, and completed project if required. (this type of work would normally require building regulations approval)
Note
The short answer is try looking for "STEEL FABRICATOR'S", not steel erectors as the latter tend to focus on large projects, yell is a good source.
