Plastering & Rendering

Cracks and rough areas showing a few days after a reskim

Anonymous user 14/03/2024 - 2.35 PM

Last week i had a plasterer comes to reskim all the rooms in my 1900's Terraced house. The job was completed in a day (roughly six hours) and seemed all professional and up to scratch. After the plasterer has left though I've had some issues. First off there are rough marks all over the place. I would describe them as scrape marks from the trowel. These feels like they just require a little sandpapering but i'm not sure i should be expecting these. There also a small dimple hole in the centre of one of the walls. Next there are cracks. Being winter i was worried this was a possibility so I've left the heating off for the week while the walls were drying. Even so vertical cracks have appeared on the corners of the walls along the lines where the plasterer placed the metal corner frames over the wood supports that were there originally. Horizontal cracks have come off from these vertical cracks a few days later. Then there are rough areas that look and feel like they didn't get the last bit of skimming done to them. These are about a millimetre or so under the reskim layer so sandpapering it would make it uneven. All these issues have appeared in the week since doing the job. (not sure if links are allowed here, but see link below for the before and after pictures. The vertical shots contain the problem areas. https://drive.google.com/folderview?id=0Bw3ojYXOvOr3X0lMSWM0LVBTUk0&usp=sharing) I haven't contacted the plasterer yet, but seeing these issues appear a week after he's finished has made me worried and i just like to check with the experts what i should be expecting here. The majority of the job has ended up very smooth and was what i expected but these issues are bothering me. Is this stuff that can just be painted over (I've read in a few places that cracks are to be expected and can be painted over) or should i be able to expect him to come back out and sort this all out? The plasterer himself also came across as professional in manner and came with a very high review score from both this site and checkatrader so i was expecting a good job and at this point i'm not sure if i'm just being paranoid about it.

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

Cracks can happen along beads. I usually run 4" scrim tape vertically over existing old wooden beads to help prevent this. The section where there's a patch of plaster missing... That's rough! 6 hours and 1 man to do all the rooms is quick... I'd say it has been rushed though if that's the case. A professional plasterer would leave walls skimmed to a standard that it's ready for paint.

You should not need to sand any areas after reskim, like other comment 6 hours is fast too fast to achieve professional finish. Cracks are normal when reskiming on some backgrounds especially old lime plasters. There's a possibility that's one coat has been applied
