Wall bowing slightly (about an inch over metre and a half length)

Anonymous user 14/03/2024 - 2.35 PM

Hi all, I hope you are able to help My house has a slight bow in one of the walls that is giving me cause for concern. The bow doesn't seem too big and put it down to old settlement and the house seems quite wonky anyway as an old victorian house which I was told is quite a common problem and not too much to worry about. Recently tho I have found a rotten joist in the cellar (looks like that was historic old wet rot but has dried now) that is nearly level with the bowing wall. There is also something that seems to be starting to poke through the wall paper a little higher up the bowed wall that I hadn't noticed before as well. I have always had problems with one of the door frames slightly out of kilter as well so putting all these together is making me worry. Could the joist be the reason for my bowing wall? If it is what can be done to fix it or if not what else it could be?

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

Just for piece of mind get a local building surveyor out. Its possible that rotten joists are the cause. But always best to get a expert opinion. Keep track of any documents you get from the surveyor just in case you need to make a claim from your house insurance (they do cover this type of thing).
