Roofing

cost of ridge repairing

Anonymous user 23/02/2024 - 2.54 PM

we lated noticed a small leak when it rains in our loft( lower part), we advertised out job in muybuilder.com. some guy contacted us and did a quote, he told us it was the ridge, cos it looked all loose, we gave him the job, cos he seemed to know what he was talking about, we paid him #700 on completion. he came about 12pm lunch time with a few bags of cement, and finished the job around four pm. he cemented all the loose ridges. i now want to know, is this price fair? for four hours job? let's say including his travel time to my place. thanks.

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

I wouldn't say you'd been ripped off at all! Well, if the job has been done properly that is, and your leak has gone. I have to say that this is far more than I would have charged (if it were only the top straight set of ridge it would be about half that price) however, you were given a price which I assume you accepted. If I ask a doctor to cure my illness and he tells me a price, I don't then question how many man hours it will take for him to cure me. Even if he is expensive, I accept his price because I cannot do it myself! I don't consider myself an expensive roofer but when anybody does haggle or bemoan the money they have to pay to get roof work done I say: 'Why don't you get up there in the cold, wet, wind, danger? Because you don't want to? ....Perhaps. Because you can't be bothered? ...maybe. Or is it because you can't. You simply can't because you're not a roofer. Only a roofer can really do such work because a roofer has learnt his trade and knows how to move about the roof safely without damaging anything. I think for this reason, roofers deserve to earn a decent wage. Nobody in their right minds, if they aren't a roofer (and some would say that doing this job means we're a bit cuckoo) would go climbing around a roof. So no.....I don't think you were ripped off. I think you paid way above the going rate but then so do I sometimes when I go in a fancy bar. I may think after why did I go in there but it was my choice, they didn't drag me in.
