Chimney & Fireplace

How to best vent your chimney breast........

Anonymous user 03/03/2024 - 3.13 PM

Hello I need some advice please - and possible work done to my chimneys. I have 3 chimneys in my house. None are in use from a fireplace point of view. They were all sealed up like in picture no. 1. 2 in the through-lounge on ground floor, and they run up to the 2 respective bedrooms upstairs. And 1 in my dining room and runs up to the 3rd and final bedroom upstairs. Last year I wall mounted my TV to my living room chimney and as you can see in pic 2 I have housed my SKY box etc in a compartment in the chimney, using battons and plasterboard. Anyway my question is around the vents - as I want to make sure my chimneys can "breathe" as they say.... I have none of these anywhere in the house http://www.screwfix.com/p/map-vent-gas-louvre-vent-white-76-x-229mm/4548d I have seen no discoulouring of the walls or anything but looking at pic 3 i.e. the top of my house you can see they have all been capped off differently I can't remember what work I had done about 10 years ago but I'm sure all were swept and capped off - but why they dont all have that cowl protection i don't know. Also there are 4 pots which is weird...... The only thing I can thing of is there is a very very small column in my kitchen - could this be another stack? weird as its only 30x30cm in the corner. but no hob or anything goes to it, i actually thing its for covering central heating pipes..... Please can you advise how i can best vent my chimneys. Kind regards PIC 1 Imagine a closed off chimney opening with plasterboard and skirting board at the front base as I cannot find the link to the pic. Hi Normally each chimneys flue is vented at the top to allow air flow but keep out the rain. Then if fireplace is sealed off by a plate a louvre vent is placed in each chimney breast . This allows a flow of air through an otherwise stacknant passage . Allow flue to breathe. Quite often the top is sealed completely with no air brick or appropriate cowl
