Best way to install two external PIR security lights?
Anonymous user 28/02/2024 - 3.09 PM
Enquiring the best way to install two PIR security floodlights. I was thinking of taking a five amp spur from an up stairs socket and taking a 1.5 twin and earth not sure if it would be necessary to take a conduit out from the back of the spur and through the wall. Any alternative way to take a supply out other than spurring off ?

Twin and earth can not be used outdoors as it is no UV stable and will degraded when exposed to sunlight and rain. If your planning on doing the job as DIY, then you need to apply for Part P building regulation consent from your local authority (approx. £200 - £300), as its illegal to carry out DIY electrical work without consent. As the job itself is quite simple it would work out cheaper to hire a Part P registered electrician. All cables run outdoors either need to be fully enclosed in conduit or be of a suitable type that's UV stable, such as SWA, FP200, etc

Take a feed from nearest light inside, make sure that it is the feed and not a switch line and neutral (cable that links lights on one switch). Use a cable that is not vulnerable to external influences outside.
