how do i know if my loft floor needs strengthening or not before flooring?

Hi I'd like to insulate and board over the loft floor of my terrace house. It's a typical 1900s mid terrace 2 up 2 down, with a kitchen on groundfloor and bathroom tacked on at the back. I've been told by a friend that i may need to strengthen the joists/floor beams before i board it. how do i know or find out if i need to do this? Finally, what type of boarding should i use, and what type of insulation should i use? Thanks very much for your help

You should always get a structural engineer to draw up calculations so that you know what size rafters and joists to use it also depends on what weight you intend to put on the joists.
