damp course for a garden brick wall

I've had a brick wall built and the bricklayer has not used a damp course or industrial bricks on the base. Can anyone tell me about the foreseeable problems and how can this be fixed? Thank you.

Hi Steve, it's not compulsory to use damp proof/engineering bricks for a retaining (garden) wall. These mechanisms prevent rising damp which is obviously not what anyone wants in a dwelling as it can course one of many problems. Nevertheless, depending on how much of the brickwork is exposed to damp ground/soil you will probably find that moisture will eventually destroy the bricks and mortar joints but this could be years from now. However, Engineering bricks (in particular blue ones) will last longer and reduce chances of rising damp. Happy to discuss further. Regards, Andy

Engineering bricks or concrete blocks should always be used below ground but there is no rule that says you need a DPC for a garden wall .
