Digging out garden soil with difficult access

Anonymous user 28/02/2024 - 3.09 PM

I need to dig out a 3x4m area of garden soil (compacted) to about 300mm depth. The problem is the only access is through a gap of around 800mm between 2 buildings with a vertical step up in level of around 600mm. I managed to get a mixer up this on 2 scaffold boards but I can't see a mini-digger getting up on boards. Any trade tips or is it just down to a spade and wheelbarrow? Thanks Peter, I thought so. Would using a rotivator first make it easier for me to dig up the compacted soil?

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

You can get a micro digger down a minimum alley way space of 28 inches/71cm but the step would cause you an issue, you also have to judge the height restrictions, but most micro diggers have removable ROPS (Roll Over Protection System) we have come across this sort of problem before and have used a board from a scaffolding tower (that is no longer required as it will make it brittle and not conform to regulatory standards) to move small machinery over larger steps such as this, Hope this help, Good luck.
