Damp Proofing

rented property but we have mould!

Anonymous user 03/03/2024 - 3.12 PM

my partner and i moved into a rented bungalow in july, and now we have got mould on the window sills in the bathroom, bedroom and kitchen and a bit in the living room. We work 5 sometimes 6 days a week, its a bungalow so cannot leave windows open, when we have a shower we cannot open the window as you can see straight in as the window opens at the bottom, and the extractor fan does not work (landlord aware and it has also started to drip water!) Its cold out side so we have the heating on and dont have windows open in the evening as its freezing. The bedroom wall has been affected as has the bedroom warbrobe and the spare room wardobe. We have been advised to pull wardobes away from the walls (which we have) and ive been told to try flash bleach for the window sills but its a rented property and the landlord said its all my fault! what can i do thats not too expensive (because its rented) and can set my mind at ease??

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

Hi I've read about your problem and as a painter I've experienced this problem a lot in certain places. It can be caused by a number of things. The type of paint on the walls! If it's vinyl this increases the appearance of mould , as the condensation is attracted to the cold surface and if it's vinyl then it doesn't absorb but sits on the surface and causes the mould to grow. This is not good in a bedroom condition, and can cause health problems. Bleach on a cloth will kill it but will not prevent it from returning. I recommend Matt paint or a mould resistant paint. The window sills will get wet also and mould will appear, but wiping them each morning and drying the window area will help. The mould behind the wardrobe is a place that is dark with dead air, again the paint issue may help but it won't cure it. It's just an issue in most homes, but if the house is cold through the day, with on air movement then this will contribute to the problem. The bathroom one is again about the paint try a mould resistant paint. The fan like most fans has never enough pull, unless it's one that cost over £100. So the only thing I would suggest is to clean the mould with bleach. Re paint with mould resistant paint, open the window after your finished and dry the areas where the mould appears after each shower. Hope this helps. Tyrone

Humid air, heat & no ventilation is 100% the cause of your problems. Open windows whilst cooking or taking a shower then leave open for an hour or so afterwards. Get onto the landlord to fix the vent and if you have a carbon extractor above the oven get the landlord to install an extractor that vents outside. At the end of the day it's their property that is getting damaged.
